Perplexity searches the web for almost every question and shows its sources openly, which makes it the easiest AI engine to study. To get cited, make sure PerplexityBot can crawl you, publish pages that answer specific questions directly, and get mentioned on the sites it already cites for your category.
How Perplexity works
Perplexity combines its own index, built by PerplexityBot, with results from other search providers. For each question it retrieves a set of pages, writes an answer, and attaches numbered citations to the claims. Because sources are visible, you can see exactly which pages win for your category, which is unusual and very useful.

Step 1: Let PerplexityBot in
Perplexity says PerplexityBot respects robots.txt (AI crawler guide). Allow it explicitly if you have restrictive rules, and check that your CDN or firewall isn’t blocking it. Perplexity-User, which fetches pages for a specific user’s question, behaves differently from an indexing crawler, so check the current documentation if you need fine-grained control.
Step 2: Study the sources it already uses
Ask Perplexity 20 questions your buyers would ask. For each answer, note every cited source. You’ll usually find:
- a few review or comparison platforms,
- several “best of” or comparison articles,
- Reddit or specialist forum threads,
- the official sites of the brands it names.
Count how often each domain appears. The top ten domains are where your effort should go first.
Step 3: Make your pages easy to cite
Perplexity attaches citations to specific claims. Pages that make clear, specific, checkable claims are easier to cite than pages full of general statements.
- Put a direct answer under each heading.
- State numbers, prices and specifications plainly.
- Use tables for comparisons.
- Keep pages current and show the update date, especially for anything with “2026” or “best” in the question.
Step 4: Get onto the pages it trusts
Use your list from step 2. Complete your profiles on the review platforms, ask customers for reviews, and contact the authors of the articles Perplexity keeps citing. Where forums appear, take part openly with a named person who states their affiliation.
A note on traffic
Perplexity sends referral traffic you can see in analytics (look for perplexity.ai as the source). The volume is modest for most sites. These visitors have already read a summary before they click, so track their conversion rate separately from ordinary search traffic. This GA4 set-up captures them.
